Iran to hold ISBT Academy Day on Rare Blood Donors
On 17 September, 2014, Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO) will host ISBT Academy Day on Rare Blood Donors. The Academy educational day is regional or national events that have been supported by the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) Academy.
Prior to this event, National Rare Blood Donor Day was celebrated in Iran on 11 January. Iran is the only country in Eastern Mediterranean Region which joined ISBT Working Party on Rare Blood Donors in 2010.
Today more than 4000 rare blood donors from 26 countries have been registered in international rare donor database. To meet the requests of patients with rare blood groups, IBTO regularly screens rare blood types from blood donor samples. Till now more than 15000 blood samples have been phenotyped.
The objectives of the event are:
1. To learn about important steps of establishing a successful national rare donor program
2. To share experiences and challenges of participating countries in recruiting and maintaining rare donors
3. To know the categories of rare blood types identified in each country
4. To learn about experiences of other countries in providing rare blood to patients living in a far distance from where the unit is stored
IBTO aims to screen 0.1% of total Iranian population (No: 75000 blood donors) for rare blood types and also develop a regional network for rare blood donors.
