Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO) and Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) signed an agreement to set up "ECO blood safety network"
.
Establishment of ECO Blood Safety Network has been strongly recommended by the First Meeting of the Heads of Blood Transfusion Organizations/Authorities of ECO Member States (Tehran, 23-24 June 2008);

 The meeting had been proposed and hosted by IBTO with cooperation of ECO Secretariat.

The safety of blood and blood products remains a continuing cause for concern, particularly in developing countries. Access to blood safety information is essential to overcome the challenges and solve problems that face in the region. It is also a key for analyzing the trends of changes and developments in the field. However, the status of blood safety in the ECO Member Countries including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan , Iran,  Kazakhstan , Kyrgyz Republic , Pakistan, Tajikistan,  Turkey , Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan has not been comprehensively determined .

By the end of 2008, IBTO offered a proposal  to collect, analyze , compare  and update statistics on blood safety in ECO Member States in order to identify the shortcomings at regional level and to suggest recommendations for improvement.

This proposal has been approved and financed in the 55th ECO meeting of the Council of Permanent Representatives (CPR) held on 11th January, 2010.

Setting up a regional information network (e-network) to record and update information on blood safety will be the output of this project.
